Sept 15 - Oct 15     Hispanic Heritage Month - This special month celebrating Hispanic culture, events and people will kick off on Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00 a.m. in McKinney Park with a Vaquero Breakfast.  It will continue for the entire month and include a parade, Mexican rodeo, luncheons and receptions honoring Hispanic educators, medical professionals, mentors and women.  A highlight of the month is the Columbus Day Reading program on October 12 at 11:30 a.m.  It will conclude on October 15.  For more information about participating in or volunteering for the events, call Jesse Porras at 337-2189, ECISD at 334-7100 or Carol Uranga at 349-9840.

Sept 16
The Southwest Shakespeare Festival 2010 at the Globe Theatre - Three plays, three weeks and a lot of special events describe the Southwest Shakespeare Festival for 2010.  Beginning on September 2, 2010 and continuing through the month, the Festival explores the ways in which individuals withdraw from society.  In King Lear, the aging King discovers that pride offers no comfort, but a loving daughter does.  An astronomer in Night Sky suffers a head injury and loss of language to aphasia and the blind/deaf Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker is totally cut off from the world.  In additional to the plays, there is an exhibition at the Ellen Noel Art Museum, “Colors of the Wind” by the legally blind artist, George Mendoza.  The museum, the Aphasia Center of West Texas and the Globe will host symposia and post-show talk-backs about aphasia.  There will be pre-show entertainment, post-show parties a reading of Pericles—and all of this is available right here in Odessa!!  Call 332-1586 for information and ticket prices or check the website, www.glbesw.org
